This is a treasure trove.

Holy crap, LA in the 30s. It’s like Chinatown up in here.

I love the idea of cities being built over cities. During my short time in grad school, we had a project where we had to make a city tour of our choosing. I ended up enjoying the project I chose but I wish I had pursued another project on the layers upon layers that make up a city. It’s not quite as pronounced in LA as it is in NYC but something could be done (the public transportation rails that fell into disuse all over the city maybe?)

I hate when people diss on LA, especially those who haven’t spent any time here or a very short amount of time. It also irks me when people like Pat Morrison defend LA then take a weird stab at the Westside, like we are less than because we don’t live downtown or on the east side… I know I’m very late on this whole thing but people need to stop hating on this city.
It is so cool seeing some of the UCLA LA Times collection negatives on tumblr. I have personally scanned some of them. Not this one. That’s not my handwriting and I would’ve remembered Joan Didion.
Since this is also property of UCLA, the link can be found here: http://unitproj.library.ucla.edu/dlib/lat/display.cfm?ms=uclalat_1429_b660_264720&searchType=keyword&k=didion&w=none&x=title&y=none&z=none&s=1
